Freight Class Calculator
Estimate your NMFC freight class from weight and dimensions using density — the same method we use to rate LTL shipments.

This is a density-based estimate. Final NMFC class can also depend on commodity, stowability, handling, and liability — our freight team verifies it before dispatch.
Get a Real Freight QuoteHow freight class is calculated
NMFC freight class (50–500) is driven primarily by density — how many pounds your freight weighs per cubic foot. Calculate volume as length × width × height (in inches) ÷ 1,728 to get cubic feet, then divide weight by that volume. Denser freight earns a lower, cheaper class; light, bulky freight earns a higher class.
| Density (lb/ft³) | Approx. class |
|---|---|
| 30+ | 60 |
| 22.5 – 30 | 65 |
| 15 – 22.5 | 70 |
| 12 – 15 | 77.5 |
| 10 – 12 | 85 |
| 8 – 10 | 92.5 |
| 6 – 8 | 100 |
| 4 – 6 | 125 |
| 2 – 4 | 150 |
| Under 2 | 175+ |
